Sisters are the best.

Two nights ago my solder sister and I spent four hours talking before bed. Yes, that DOES mean we stayed up until 3 a.m. We haven’t done that in a while, since she has a man in her life who she normally stays up talking to on Skype until I’m already dead to the world (aka sleeping). Anyhoo, it was one of those great heart-to-heart sister talks that includes rants of frustration and tears and hugs and ends in prayers. We talked about guilt and emotional defeat, feelings of worthlessness and those days when we just don’t feel close to the Lord. We know those are all lies, but the fact of the confusion is very real.

Then today, she posted a song for me on my facebook page. I listened and read the words and just let myself cry. It’s awesome to know that she has my back, she knows what I’m struggling with, and she knows what will speak to me and encourage me.

And so I pass it on to you.

Ten in a Bucket

Inspired by my friend Anne. Oops, I mean Ann. Without an e. I don’t know why. She wrote a post about the ten most important things on her Bucket List. Do you have a Bucket List? I’m sure you have. I have never seen the movie, but I have one; it’s a “Before I die, I want to…” sort of thing. Ann’s got me thinking. There are always, constantly, forever things that I casually say ‘someday I’ll do that’, but… will I? Will I even care next week? What are the things that have endured on my list for years, and will stay there until accomplished? Things I’m quite sure I won’t change my mind about. Ever. Until I kick the Bucket. Bwaha.

1) Hang-gliding. The closest man has come to actually flying. This has been on my list since I was just 3 years old and my family visited my Aunt in Georgia. We took a trip to Lookout Mountain TN, and I watched the hang-gliders launching from the top of the mountain and fly down to the valley below. (There are even pictures of me watching, but there’s a baby sleeping in my lap so I can’t go look for them right now.)  It is magical. I can imagine how absolutely free you feel.

2) Visit Scotland in general, and Foulis Castle in Particular.   It’s not a huge, romantic, fairy-tale castle. But it’s very real. And it’s the seat of my family’s clan. So… that’s a no-brainer. 🙂

Morning Has Broken

Morning has broken, like the first morning
Blackbird has spoken, like the first bird
Praise for the singing, praise for the morning
Praise for the springing fresh from the word

Sweet the rain’s new fall, sunlit from heaven
Like the first dew fall, on the first grass
Praise for the sweetness of the wet garden
Sprung in completeness where his feet pass

Mine is the sunlight, mine is the morning
Born of the one light, Eden saw play
Praise with elation, praise every morning
God’s recreation of the new day

I am not a morning person. In fact, growing up, the LAST thing I wanted to hear in the morning was my
mom opening my bedroom door and chirping “Rise and shine!”

More like “Drag yourself out of bed and moan hopelessly.”

There are those days though, that I wake to bright spring sunshine, birds singing and new green things
all around me, and I can’t help but be cheerful in spite of the hour. My pastor has been encouraging
and challenging us to give each day to the Lord when we rise, and I am trying to do that. It doesn’t
work every day. I forget. I’m human. I wish there was a magic switch in me that, once I flip it, a new
habit is formed, never to be broken. We were listening to this song in the car recently, and I really
listened to the words. Such praise. Such joy in life. And such a willing heart to recognize God’s hand
in all of it!

As to my particular choice of artist, I grew up on all of Michael Card’s music, and his
voice is musical comfort food to me. Simplistic vocal style and beautiful instrumentals, with the added
bittersweet feeling of childhood memories makes it my favorite version of this song. I hope you enjoy it too.
